Step 1 — How big is the insect?
Please select a size before identifying.
Photo Tips for Best Results
✅ Good
Side profile shot showing the full body — head, thorax, and abdomen clearly visible
❌ Avoid
Extreme close-ups of just the head or abdomen — size and body shape are key to identification
✅ Good
Include something for scale — a finger, a coin, or a leaf next to the insect helps determine size
❌ Avoid
Blurry or dark photos. Use tap-to-focus on your phone and make sure there's enough light
✅ Good
Photo of the nest or entry point if visible — nest shape is one of the strongest identification clues
❌ Avoid
Photos taken from too far away where the insect is just a tiny speck — get within 1-2 feet if safe
- Size matters — yellow jackets are about 1/2 inch, European hornets are 1 to 1.5 inches. If you can capture the insect next to something of known size, the ID will be much more accurate
- If the nest is visible, photograph it — open paper comb = paper wasp, grey football nest = bald-faced hornet, ground hole = yellow jacket or digger bee
- Natural daylight gives the best color accuracy. Flash can wash out the distinctive markings that tell species apart
- Never put yourself at risk for a photo — if it's not safe to get close, take the best shot you can from a distance and we'll do our best
